They're taking the pizza! How chains charge up to 33 per cent more for the SAME meals depending on where you live (and diners in Cardiff pay the least)

  • Diners in London and Surrey can pay up to £4 more for the same pizzas
  • The four big pizza chains all charge different prices depending on location
  • The research is based on ordering a takeaway or delivery large margherita pizza

Pizza chains are charging customers up to 33 per cent more in some parts of the UK than others, it has been revealed.

Hungry diners in London and Surrey are being charged up to £4 more per pizza at the four biggest pizza delivery and takeaway restaurants: Domino's, Pizza Hut, Pizza Express and Papa John's.

All four chains list different prices for the same takeaway pizzas depending on your location, with price hikes particularly affecting customers in London and Surrey.

Papa John's (pictured) was found to charge different prices at different locations. The most expensive pizzas were found in London and Surrey while the cheapest at locations such as Liverpool were up to £4 less costly

At Domino's, some London and Surrey stores charge £15.99 for a large Margherita pizza, but diners who visit Hull's city centre branch will only pay £12.99 - a 23 per cent difference.

It it the same with Pizza Hut. Fast food fans can enjoy a large Margherita Classic for under £14 in Cambridge and Slough, but will have to pay £1.90 more in central London locations such as the Strand or Baker Street.

Upmarket chain Pizza Express had the smallest price differences between locations, but still charged central London customers 11 per cent more on delivery app Deliveroo - £9.60 - than diners outside of the capital who can buy the same Margherita for £8.70 or £8.95 to takeaway from branches in cities such as Aberdeen, Derby, Glasgow, Swansea and Worcester.

The cheapest pizza prices were found in the north of England, Wales and in Scotland.

Across the four chains, the cheapest city to buy a pizza was found to be Cardiff, where the average price of a large Margherita is £11.83.

Hull and Colchester were also among the cheapest areas to eat a pizza.

The most expensive areas on average across the four biggest chains were London, Surrey and Birmingham.

The research analysed the prices of large margherita pizzas across four of the biggest pizza chains sold in 19 UK cities.

Pizza chains have been contacted for comment.

A Pizza Express spokeswoman said: 'Whilst our prices do vary slightly between different restaurants due to a number of factors, each dish is lovingly made by our Pizzaiolos using the finest ingredients, offering the best value to our customers.'

Louise Butler, a spokeswoman for Domino's said: 'We're committed to providing freshly handmade pizza at the best possible value, which is why we offer a range of competitive prices and great national deals.

'Our franchisees determine local prices so there can be some difference due to other regional variations such as wage levels, rental costs, petrol prices and in London, the living wage'.
