Latvia has received the highest score in the National Cyber Security Index for its cybersecurity policy and analysis of cyber threats, representatives of the Environmental Protection and Regional Development Ministry told LETA.

Latvia has also received the highest possible number of points for the protection of national level services and documents and the measures taken so far to counter cyberattacks.

Based on the 12 various digital security aspects which have been divided into three groups, Latvia has scored 72 out of the maximum 100 points, taking 12th place in the National Cyber Security Index. Estonia and Lithuania have been ranked third and sixth respectively. All three Baltic states have been ranked higher than such IT superpowers as the United States, Russia, Sweden and China, the representatives of the Environmental Protection and Regional Development Ministry noted.

"We have always been supporting the growth of not only a digital but also cybersecure economy, investing in top-level e-governance infrastructure," said Edmunds Belskis, the ministry's deputy state secretary for IT.

The National Cyber Security Index, developed by Estonia's e-Governance Academy, is a global index, which measures the preparedness of countries to prevent cyber threats and manage cyber incidents. The NCSI is also a database with publicly available evidence materials and a tool for national cyber security capacity building.

Overall Estonia is ranked 3rd and Lithuania 6th.
