Bright orange and retro-reflective white. Most people know that is the sign of construction!

However, according to the Idaho Transportation Department, the signals aren't always apparent.

"If congestion is backed up, you may come across the congestion of traffic before ever seeing a sign of road work ahead," said Jake Melder, Public Information Specialist for ITD.

Meanwhile, some drivers just choose to ignore the signs.

"[We] do hear stories regularly of people who go into the construction zones" said Melder. "They may be moving barrels so they can get in... because they don't want to deal with congestion that is a result of construction."

The cones, barrels, signs, and lights that signify traffic should not be ignored — for the safety of you, other drivers, and construction workers.

"Driver behavior is very important," said Melder. "We understand it may be a temporary inconvenience, but we ask that you practice some patience during that inconvenience because the end result is going to be improvement to your roadway."

Road construction zones are constantly changing! One way to stay safe is by downloading the Idaho 511 app that tells you exactly where construction is happening as it's happening.

And, of course, the best way to stay safe — in a construction zone or not — stay focused on the task of driving!
