The Chick-fil-A on Long Point Road in Mount Pleasant (above) is seeking to improve the flow of its drive-thru service by adding traffic lanes. The chain also is planning improvements at two other Charleston-area restaurants.

Fast-food diners might need to eat more beef this summer as three Chick-fil-A restaurants plan to undergo renovations.

The establishments near Tanger Outlets at 4926 Centre Pointe Drive in North Charleston, 653 Long Point Road in Mount Pleasant and 1656 Savannah Highway in West Ashley are all slated for improvements, though whether they all will close during the updates or for how long is still to be determined.

The North Charleston restaurant is temporarily closed for renovations to the kitchen and dining room and expected to reopen in “the coming months,” according to a statement from Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A.

West of the Ashley, plans are twofold for the U.S. Highway 17 restaurant. Updates include adding two drive-thru lanes and increasing the building by 500 square feet to expand the amount of cold-storage space, according to plans presented to the city of Charleston's Design Review Board.

The updated restaurant would measure 4,929 square feet while the drive-thru would expand to three lanes for face-to-face ordering and funnel into two for outside meal delivery if the changes are approved.

In Mount Pleasant, proposed improvements to the Long Point Road restaurant with a focus on accessibility are scheduled to go before the town’s review board on April 24.

As of now, Chick-fil-A wants to expand the East Cooper location’s drive-thru into multiple lanes to address the volume of traffic and avoid traffic backups next to Long Point during peak hours. The to-go queues would then be relocated out of the way of dine-in customers trying to get in and out of the parking lot.

“Chick-fil-A is also working with local officials on the approval process for renovations to Chick-fil-A Savannah Highway and Chick-fil-A Long Point Road,” the company statement said. “Complete details and timing for these projects are not available at this time.”

Additional plans to the Mount Pleasant restaurant include adding canopies to shield employees from the elements when they are outside handling orders.
