Ever wondered how your McDonald’s burger goes from kitchen to your hands?

Well, some lucky locals got a rare behind-the-scenes pass into the golden arches to find out.

As part of McDonald’s SA’s Open Doors initiative, the group was taken on an exclusive tour to see exactly how it all comes together — from the fresh, locally sourced ingredients to the clean kitchens where the famous chicken and beef burgers are made.

Guests also popped by the McCafé station in Summerstrand, where baristas showed off how they brew those popular McDonald’s coffees.

The tour started with a strict hygiene check and before anyone could step inside the kitchen, hands had to be properly sanitised, and visitors were asked to wear hairnets to keep the working space clean.

From there, the group was taken to the back of house storeroom, where each box is labelled, and everything has its own place to make sure the kitchen runs smoothly.

The next stop was the walk-in refrigerator, set at -18ºC to ensure items such as meat and chicken are kept frozen until they are ready to be used.

After the storeroom and fridge, the group moved through to the kitchen, to see the cooking stations in action and catch a glimpse of the drive-through operation.

Staff explained how the orders come in, how the system tracks each step, and how the team works quickly to get the food packed and handed over at the window in mere minutes.

McDonald’s SA chief marketing officer Daniel Padiachy said: “Beyond offering insights into McDonald’s daily operations, the event served as a strategic platform to engage with important stakeholders, including local media, community leaders.

“It aligned with McDonald’s broader initiative of making a positive impact on communities through its Together Mzansi platform, reinforcing customer confidence in the brand’s values, transparency, and proudly local SA sourcing.”
