Police were called out to a McDonald’s restaurant in the US to deal with angry customers after the branch ran out of a limited edition Szechuan dipping sauce.

The fast food chain had promised fans of the popular US science fiction cartoon show Rick and Morty that a long out of production Szechaun sauce that is referenced in the show’s third season would be available for a limited time.

Fans descended on McDonald’s restaurants in cities across America on Saturday in hope of buying the sauce which led to huge queues.

But police were called out to at least one outlet when customers waiting in line grew angry and began chanting: “We want sauce.”

Officers attended a branch in Wellington, Florida, when people became frustrated after being told it had ran out of the limited edition condiment, according to local reporter Lulu Ramadan.

At another restaurant in Newark, New Jersey, customers held up bright yellow signs reading: “Give us the sauce” and “McDonald’s scammed us”.

The fast food giant has apologised to fans who missed out and said: “The best fans in the multiverse showed us what they got today. We hear you and we’re sorry not everyone could get some super-limited Szechuan.”

Packs of the condiment have since been listed for up to hundreds of dollars on eBay.
