The second fatal case of influenza was confirmed earlier this week at the Conde de São Januário Hospital Center  (CHCSJ), according to a statement released by the Health Bureau (SSM).

The victim was a local male resident aged 90. He already suffered from several chronic diseases, among them dementia, before he was diagnosed with the flu.

On February 12, the patient was delivered to the CHCSJ, where he was diagnosed with influenza B and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. While there, he was admitted for treatment.

His condition improved, but symptoms of pneumonia and shock were later presented.

In addition to the nonagenarian, a 64-year- old local man is in a serious condition due to the flu, having been diagnosed with influenza A and pneumoconiosis. He also was not vaccinated during the 2017-2018 seasonal flu vaccination period.

Since the beginning of the year until Tuesday, 42 cases of flu were recorded along with pneumonia or other complications. eighty percent of the patients were not vaccinated. In eight cases, there was no need for hospitalization; 24 patients have already been discharged, and two cases were fatal.

Eight people are still hospitalized, one of whom (the aforementioned 64-year-old man) is still in a critical condition. The remaining seven are stable.
