Failing to Prepare Equals Preparing to Fail

By: Doug Baker, Vice President - Industry Relations, Private Brands, Technology, Food Marketing Institute

20161208-FMI-1372r-WEBAccording to the FBI’s study of Active Shooter Incidents in the United States in 2016 and 2017 there were 50 shootings during this time period that were designated as active shooter incidents. This figure is more than double the 11.4 average the country had of incidents from 2000 – 2013

Active shooter incidents are on the rise and often begin and end so quickly that by the time first responders arrive the event is over, and the shooter has either fled or taken their own life. Due to this, employees are often in the best position to protect themselves and others in an active shooter situation by taking immediate action. Customers and others are also likely to follow the lead of employees and managers during an Active Shooter incident.

Preparation is key for a place of business to understand what to do when you don’t know what to do. With frequent training, development of awareness and by forging a relationship with your local police or sheriff office we can minimize the negative impact of an active shooter situation.

With FMI’s Active Shooter Guideline, we’ve consolidated information from both the public and private sector to assist key personnel in preparing, responding, stabilizing and finally recovering from an active shooter event. As food retailers we must be on constant alert for signs of danger that puts our customers at risk. We can’t afford to be caught off guard and we can’t afford to be a step too slow—the stakes are too high.
