US-based fast food chain Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) has opened a new store in Nairobi, raising its national branch count to 15.

KFC, which operates locally through franchisee Kuku Foods East Africa, opened the new drive-through outlet on Waiyaki Way (near the headquarters of Safaricom) and within a Total petrol station.

Next month, the firm is set to open a new store in Hurlingham as well as its maiden outlet in Eldoret at Rupa Mall. In early December, KFC also plans to open a branch in Southfield Mall in Embakasi in what will bring its total branches to 18.

“We listen to our customers and their requests form a big part of our growth strategy,” Jacques Theunissen, the operations director for Kuku Foods East Africa, said in an email.

“We will continue to expand in years to come and strive to give every Kenyan the opportunity to experience our quality food and service we provide at KFC.”

KFC now operates 12 branches in Nairobi, including two in the central business district, Galleria Mall, Garden City Mall, the Junction Mall and the Hub shopping complex.

The chain also has stores in Nakuru, Nanyuki and Kisumu as well as eight in Uganda and five in Tanzania.

KFC’s expansion also comes amid increased competition from big players in the fast food industry.

South African seafood chain Ocean Basket, sandwich chain Subway, ice cream seller Cold Stone Creamery, Japanese firm Toridoll and Domino’s Pizza have opened stores in Kenya.

These global players are turning to emerging markets such as Africa for growth, attracted by rising disposable household incomes, fast economic growth and a young population, according a study by McKinsey & Co.

Nairobi’s position as a hub for multiple multinationals has also attracted the global restaurant chains.
